Ware Shoals South Carolina
Ware Shoals SC is an adorable historic town,
which, oddly enough, is located in three different counties:
Abbeville SC, Greenwood South Carolina, and Laurens County. Nestled along the Saluda River in Upstate South Carolina, Ware Shoals South Carolina is included in the
Greenville,
Mauldin,
Easley Metro area and was once the site of a booming mill and textile town. In the early 1800's Ware Shoals was the site of a water wheel grist mill that was owned by Rutledge Ford. This lucrative industry brought many settlers and others to the town, and eventually, Nat Dial of nearby Laurens County SC decided
to spearhead a project to damn the Saluda River and create power for a cotton mill. After running out of money, Dial sold the project to Benjamin D. Riegel, and it was Riegel who later founded the Ware Shoals Manufacturing Company. In 1906 the state of the art textile mill was constructed, and by 1916 it employed more than 2,000 people;
by the 1960s, the mill was still an important part of the community, employing more than 5,000 people. Today, Ware Shoals remains a vibrant little hamlet, and is home to unique events like the Ware Shoals Catfish Festival. Visitors and residents alike enjoy wonderful recreational opportunities, including great fishing, and of course, some spectacular
South Carolina Golf Courses located along the Saluda River. The Ware Shoals Golf Courses and Greenwood SC Golf Courses offer excellent and challenging course designs amidst some truly fantastic scenery.
